TBILISI, Georgia (AP) _ David Kipiani, a star forward on the Soviet Union's soccer team in the 1970s and '80s and coach of his native Georgia until recently, died after a car crash. He was 50.

Kipiani was in a crash near the town of Tserovani, 18 miles west of Tbilisi, Interior Ministry spokeswoman Maya Musidze said Monday.

He was rushed to a hospital but didn't regain consciousness. The Interfax news agency said he lost control of the car and hit a tree.

Kipiani coached Georgia's national team from 1997 until he quit a month ago after several losses. His playing career ended in 1982.
