TASHKENT, Uzbekistan (AP) _ Top-seeded Marat Safin and second-seeded Tommy Haas advanced to the second round of the ATP President's Cup on Tuesday.

Safin, ranked third, beat French qualifier Gregory Carraz, 6-2, 6-4, and Haas defeated Switzerland's Marc Rosset 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3.

Third-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov needed three sets to beat Germany's Alexander Waske 6-7 (6), 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6).

After trading the first two sets, Kafelnikov rallied from 2-5 down in the third and 5-1 down in the tiebreak to win the match.

The 147th-ranked Waske had 37 aces in 2-hour, 24-minute match.

Fifth-seeded Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand needed just 45 minutes to beat France's Anthony Dupuis 6-1, 6-2; and Denmark's Kristian Pless defeated fourth-seeded Rainer Schuettler 7-6 (4), 6-2.
