Federal judge dismisses lawsuit against Louisiana sheriff

October 1, 2018

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit against a Louisiana sheriff’s office in the shooting death of a burglary suspect three years ago.

Nola.com/The Times-Picayune reported U.S. District Judge Ivan Lemelle dismissed a lawsuit Friday against the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office for the 2015 shooting.

Richard Greenwood sued the sheriff for the shooting death of his son, 30-year-old Darien Greenwood of Covington.

Lemelle said two deputies acted reasonably in a “tense and rapidly evolving situation” in which the suspect resisted.

A homeowner spotted Greenwood and another man leaving his home Oct. 20 and called police. Deputies stopped the suspects’ vehicle and the two men ran.

One suspect was captured. Greenwood was found hiding several hours later and the sheriff said officers fired when Greenwood lunged at the officers.
