First 100 Days Speech Live on CNN, CBS

March 31, 1995

WASHINGTON (AP) _ House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s speech capping the first 100 days of Congress will be carried live on CNN and as part of a one-hour CBS special report on Congress next Friday.

Democrats, meanwhile, are demanding response time.

Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., and House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt, D-Mo., wrote to the major television networks Friday requesting time to respond to Gingrich’s address.

``The decision to provide the speaker with one-half hour of unpaid time is unprecedented,″ Daschle and Gephardt wrote. ``In fact, we are unaware of any instance when a leader of either party in the House or Senate requested and was granted time on this basis. The decision having been made, however, we now request the same consideration for our party to assure a balanced presentation to the American people.″

ABC and NBC do not intend to break into regularly scheduled prime-time programming to broadcast it live, according to network representatives.

``If it turns out to be newsworthy, we will deal with it in `Dateline NBC,‴ which airs shortly after Gingrich’s speech is expected to conclude, NBC spokeswoman Heidi Pokorny said.

She also said the ``Today″ show and ``NBC Nightly News″ would originate from Washington part of next week to coincide with the anticipated completion of the GOP’s ``Contract With America.″

ABC has said that it would include coverage of the speech in one of its news shows.
