Wallet-thefts continue in central Greenwich
GREENWICH — Police are advising the public to keep their wallets safe from opportunistic pickpockets, following two recent thefts in central Greenwich.
On Sunday afternoon, a shopper at Whole Foods on East Putnam Avenue reported that his wallet was taken out of a cart. Later on, he was notified that someone had been attempting to make purchases with his credit card. In late July, a similar report about the theft of a wallet at the market was made to police.
In a similar incident, a woman having brunch at Bistro Versailles Sunday morning, near the open window in front. Her wallet was missing when she looked for it in her purse, and she was also victimized by credit-card fraud later in the day. Police said it appeared that someone stole the wallet from her purse, possibly from the street.
Police can’t say if the two wallet-thefts are related, but note that crimes of opportunity can be prevented.
“Keep your personal belongings in sight, don’t leave your hand bags open,” commented police Lt. John Slusarz.
