Lewis-Akinwande WBC title fight July 12 in Atlantic City
LONDON (AP) _ Lennox Lewis will make the first defense of his WBC heavyweight title against Henry Akinwande on July 12 in Atlantic City, N.J.
The fight, originally planned for London, was set today for Atlantic City after negotiations with Akinwande’s promoter, Don King. Lewis’ manager, Frank Maloney, said Lewis is expected to earn $5.2 million.
Lewis (30-1) won the title Feb. 7 in Las Vegas when the referee stopped a fight with Oliver McCall after McCall threw only two punches in the fourth round and one in the fifth. Lewis’ only loss was to McCall.
Akinwande (32-0-1), who has relinquished his WBO title, was awarded the mandatory challenge because he was the highest available contender since Mike Tyson is to fight WBA champion Evander Holyfield in a rematch June 28.
