Cross country: WHS girls 8th, boys 12th at Hadler

September 11, 2018

MENOMONEE FALLS — Watertown’s girls cross country team finished eighth while the boys took 12th at the Matt Hadler Invitational on Saturday.

The Gosling girls scored 204 points.

Senior Marissa Wackett led Watertown, finishing 18th in 20 minutes, 28 seconds. Junior Cara Smith and sophomore Autumn Meyers finished 33rd and 34th, respectively, after each crossed the finish line in 21:14.

Sophomore Emma Gilbertsen (58th, 22:25) and senior Michaelee Teska (61st, 22:34) completed the team score. Juniors Vanessa Olson (63rd, 22:39) and Kayla Tobin (76th, 25:23) also competed.

“The course wasn’t a full 5,000,” Watertown cross country coach Kirk Wackett said. “Marisa was just out of the medals again, but she ran really well. She ran a season best. It was almost an identical time to last year but this course was muddy.

“Autumn almost literally finished side by side with Cara. She hung tough with Cara. That’s good to see. That 4-5-6 is still pretty interchangeable. They ran as a little pack the whole way.”

Senior Matthew Engel finished 19th in 17 minutes, 2 seconds to lead Watertown’s boys. Junior Izak Jensen (49th, 18:07), senior Joshua Vana (50th, 18:10), sophomore Christopher Kitzhaber (10th, 18:26) and freshman Oliver Meyers (94th, 19:27) completed the team’s score of 283.

Sophomores Nathan Williams (96th, 19:36) and Joshua Krueger (97th, 18:26) also competed.

“Matthew was in the top 20 and just outside the medals,” coach Wackett said. “He made some good improvements this week. We’re hurting when we drop after that. There’s over a minute gap between our four and our five.

“Oliver did a great job. He is rising up as a freshman, but that minute gap is killing us on the boys side. We’ve got to get our 5-6-7 to keep pushing each other so we can close that gap.”

Watertown travels to Mount Horeb for the Badger Challenge on Tuesday.
