TV Evangelist Robert Schuller Says He Won’t Be Caught in Sex Scandal
GARDEN GROVE, Calif. (AP) _ Evangelist Robert Schuller says he has no need to worry about facing a damaging sex scandal like fellow TV preachers Jim Bakker and Jimmy Swaggart because he’s never been unfaithful to his wife.
″I can tell you right here and now, as far as Robert Schuller is concerned, I have had sex with only one woman - my wife - and the first time was my wedding night,″ the founder of Orange County’s Crystal Cathedral church said Tuesday.
Bakker lost his TV ministry last year and was defrocked by the Assemblies of God Church after he admitted to a sexual tryst with former church secretary Jessica Hahn. The same congregation suspended Swaggart after he admitted last week to having visited a reputed prostitute in a motel.
Schuller, 61, made his remarks to approximately 1,000 people attending a special Tuesday night meeting where it was announced that the Rev. Herman ″Bud″ Ridder, president of the Crystal Cathedral since 1983, was resigning.
Schuller founded the Crystal Cathedral, originally known as the Garden Grove Community Church, in the mid-1950s. The church, known for its stunning crystal cathedral headquarters in Garden Grove, now boasts more than 5,500 members.
