West Virginia man admits to killing wife during divorce
FAIRMONT, W.Va. (AP) — A West Virginia man has admitted to shooting his wife to death while the two were going through what authorities say was a “volatile divorce.”
The Times West Virginian reports 52-year-old Donald Ray Carpenter pleaded guilty this week to first-degree murder in the 2018 death of Trina Carpenter. The plea was part of a deal under which Marion County Prosecuting Attorney Jeffrey Freeman will recommend Carpenter be sentenced to life in prison, with parole eligibility in 15 years.
Freeman told the court that Carpenter repeatedly shot his wife with a .40-calibur handgun while she was in her car alongside a Marion County road in January 2018. Surveillance video showed Carpenter parking near the crime scene, and investigators found matching ammunition and the wife’s blood in Carpenter’s car.
