Coal Grove earns section top seed in boys Division IV

HUNTINGTON — Playing well against a strong schedule paid off for Coal Grove High School’s boys basketball team.

The Hornets (14-5) are the top seed in the lower bracket of the Ohio Division IV Meigs/Northwest sectional tournament. Coal Grove, which played mostly Division II and III teams, drew a first-round bye and will meet the winner of No. 8 Federal Hocking (5-13) and No. 9 Symmes Valley (5-13) at 6 p.m. Feb. 26 at Meigs High School. The Lancers and Vikings meet at 6:15 p.m. Feb. 20 at Meigs.

Also on Feb. 26, fifth-seeded Ironton St. Joe (13-6) plays No. 4 seed Fairfield (9-8) at 8:30 p.m. at Northwest High School. The winner moves on to meet the Coal Grove/Symmes Valley/Federal Hocking victor in the first round of the Athens District tournament at 5:30 p.m. March 3 at Ohio University.

Green (12-6), the No. 2 seed in the lower bracket, drew a bye and at 6 p.m. Feb. 27 will face the winner of the 8 p.m. Feb. 20 game featuring No. 8 Whiteoak (8-10) and Portsmouth Notre Dame (1-17). The team that emerges from the Feb. 27 contest advances to the district semifinals in Athens against either No. 3 Waterford (11-6) and sixth-seeded Southern (10-8) at 7:15 p.m. March 3. The Wildcats and Tornadoes play at 8:30 p.m. Feb. 27 at Meigs.

South Gallia (11-8) drew the seventh seed in the upper bracket and will face No. 10 Miller (1-16) at 8 p.m. Feb. 20 at Meigs. The winner takes on No. 2 Trimble (13-3) at 6 p.m. Feb. 27 at Meigs.

In Division III, Wheelersburg (18-0) drew the top seed in the lower bracket of the Jackson/Waverly sectional. The Pirates play at 6 p.m. Feb. 22 at Jackson against the winner of Monday’s 5 p.m. game pitting No. 8 Meigs (10-9) against No. 9 South Point (7-11) at Jackson.

Eastern-Brown (14-4) received the No. 2 seed and a bye.

Fairland (15-4) is seeded third and will play No. 14 Rock Hill (3-15) at 6:15 p.m. Feb. 20 at Jackson. The winner plays for the sectional title at 8:30 p.m. Feb. 23 against the victor from the 8 p.m. Feb. 20 game featuring No. 6 Alexander (12-5) and No. 11 Nelsonville-York (7-10).

In the upper bracket, Adena (15-4) earned the top seed and a bye. The Warriors will face the winner of the 6:15 p.m. Feb. 18 game involving No. 8 Portsmouth (7-12) and No. 9 Portsmouth West (6-12) at 6 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Waverly Downtown Arena.

No. 5 seed Ironton (13-5) takes on 12th-seeded Minford (6-12) at 8:30 p.m. Feb. 18 in Jackson. The winner plays at 8:30 p.m. Feb. 22 against the victor from fourth seed Oak Hill (14-4) and No. 13 Crooksville (5-13). The Oaks meet the Ceramics at 6:45 p.m. Feb. 18 in Jackson.

No. 7 Chesapeake (12-7) plays No. 10 Belpre (9-10) at 8 p.m. Feb. 19 in Jackson, with the winner taking on either No. 2 Eastern-Pike (18-1) or No. 15 Wellston (3-13). The Eagles and Rockets meet at 6:15 p.m. Feb. 19 in Jackson.

In Division II, Gallia Academy (10-7), seeded seventh in the Logan/Southeastern lower bracket, plays No. 10 River Valley (3-16) at 8 p.m. Feb. 19 at Southeastern High School. The winner plays for the sectional title at 3 p.m. Feb. 23 against No. 2 Jackson (13-6) at Southeastern.
