Suspect Arrested in Suburban Slayings Case; Another Man Shot
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Deputies arrested a fifth person Monday in the kidnap slayings of three shoppers, and police fatally shot another man while serving a search warrant in the case, an official said.
Four others were arrested Friday for investigation of murder in the slayings last month of two women abducted from a mall and a man who was kidnapped as he walked to a store.
A sheriff’s special weapons and tactics team Monday shot and killed Darryl Antonio Stephens, 27, while serving a search warrant at his apartment, said Gabe Ramirez, a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy.
The officers identified themselves outside Stephens’ residence, got no response and broke into the apartment, in a complex where two people arrested in the case last week lived, Ramirez said.
The officers found Stephens kneeling with his hands under a bed. Fearing he had a weapon, they shot him when he rapidly removed his hands from under the bed, Ramirez said.
Some weapons were found in the apartment, Ramirez said, without elaborating.
Another SWAT team arrested Derrick Devon Colbert, 27, at his apartment early Monday, Ramirez said.
Colbert was booked for investigation of murder and held without bail, Ramirez said.
The victims were killed within a 5-mile area in suburban San Gabriel Valley over 1 1/2 weeks, apparently for credit cards and teller machine cards, police said.
The bodies of the two women were found alongside San Gabriel Valley freeways. The man’s body was found in a trash bin.
Two men and two women were arrested Friday after three of them used bank teller cards belonging to the victims, authorities said.
