Three Children Slain; Mother Takes Own Life, Police Say

November 14, 1989

PROVIDENCE, Md. (AP) _ A woman whose marriage had recently broken up apparently slashed the throats of her three sons with a pocketknife and then took her own life, police said.

The woman’s mother, who had talked with her daughter about her problems late into the night Sunday, found the bodies Monday morning in this Baltimore suburb, police said.

The body of Diane Ellen Warwick, 36, was found in a bathtub with both wrists slashed, and a Swiss army knife was found nearby, said police Cpl. Steve Doarnberger.

The bodies of her sons, Geoffrey Warwick Jr., 5; Joshua, 4; and Daniel, 3; were found in bedrooms, their throats cut, he said.

The two younger boys apparently were killed while they slept, but Geoffrey Jr. had wounds on his hands, suggesting that he had tried to ward off the attack, police said.

The case was classified a murder-suicide, police spokesman Jay Miller said.

Mrs. Warwick had been staying with her parents after separating from her husband of 13 years. She recently had been under medical supervision for depression, Miller said.
