SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) _ Leo Hamlett passed for two touchdowns and ran for another score as eighth-ranked Delaware defeated Rhode Island 24-19 for the Yankee Conference championship Saturday.

The Blue Hens (10-1 overall, 8-0 Yankee Conference) took a 24-6 lead with 8:27 remaining as Hamlett scored on a 1-yard run. The Rams (7-4, 6-2) rallied for two late scores as Shyron Sanford caught a pair of touchdown passes from Chris Hixson.

Rhode Island regained possession at its 27-yard line with 58 seconds remaining. The Rams drove to the Delaware 49 before time ran out.

The win gives the Blue Hens the conference title and an automatic berth in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs.

Hamlett completed seven of 10 passes for 196 yards. He also had 22 rushes for 70 yards. Hixson completed 29 of 54 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns.

Rhode Island took a 3-0 lead as Matt Walker kicked a 24-yard field goal with 8:08 remaining in the first quarter. Delaware took a 10-3 lead as John Key caught a 56-yard touchdown pass and Sean Leach kicked a 26-yard field goal.
