Cleveland teen shot in the back, neck after diving for cover on porch

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A 16-year-old boy was shot in the neck and back after someone opened fire on a group that dove onto a porch to take cover, according to police.

The shooting happened about 9:15 p.m. Wednesday at a home on East 71st Street and Gertrude Avenue in the city’s Broadway-Slavic Village neighborhood.

A group including the 16-year-old boy and his friends — two 18 year olds, a 25 year old and a 22 year old — were near the front door of the home, according to police reports.

Someone standing in a field across the street from the home fired several gunshots at the group, according to police reports. No one was initially hit.

A 43-year-old woman who lives in the home ran downstairs to check on her kids and their friend and reported she saw a muzzle flash from the field.

A black SUV then sped by the house and five more gunshots were fired, hitting the teen in the neck and back, according to police.

Someone drove the teen to MetroHealth, where he underwent emergency surgery, according to police.
