Guatemala Shuts Out Bolivia 1-0
WASHINGTON (AP) _ Carlos Ruiz led Guatemala to a 1-0 win over Bolivia in an international exhibition at RFK Stadium on Saturday night.
Ruiz, who plays for Major League Soccer’s L.A. Galaxy, scored in the 20th minute. He had 11 goals this season for the Galaxy, who lost in the Western Conference finals to Kansas City.
Bolivia had to play without MLS assists-leader Jaime Moreno, who is playing for D.C. United in the MLS Cup on Sunday.
Guatemala kept Bolivia goalkeeper Leonardo Fernandez busy, spending much of the first half around Bolivia’s goal. After the half, Bolivia created some offensive chances but were unable to convert. Guatemala goalkeeper Ricardo Trigueno Foster made several difficult saves in the second half to earn the shutout.
Guatemala has already made the final round of CONCACAF 2006 World Cup qualifying. Bolivia is last in the South American group.
Bolivia takes on Colombia in a qualifier on Wednesday, while Guatemala hosts Canada.
Bolivia nearly missed the trip after players demanded $1,000 each instead of $500 for the game. The Bolivian Football Federation gave in to their demands at the airport just before departure.
