Ledwaba Beats Johnson for IBF Title
HAMMANSKRAAL, South Africa (AP) _ South African Lehlohonolo Ledwaba captured the vacant IBF junior featherweight title with a convincing win over American John Michael Johnson Saturday night.
The three judges favored the Soweto-born Ledwaba 115-113, 117-112 and 115-113 at the Carousel casino near Pretoria.
Ledwaba captured the title vacated Feb. 1 by Vuyani Bungu after his 13th defense.
Ledwaba improved to 28-1-1, while Johnson, of San Antonio, suffered his sixth defeat against 26 victories (21 KOs).
In an earlier bout, South African Zolani Petelo needed less than half a round to keep his IBF strawweight title, stopping Filipino Eric Jamali with a straight left to the body.
Petelo, making the third defense of the title he won from Thailand’s Ratanopol Sor Vorapin in December 1997, improved to 12-2-2.
Jamali, a former WBO champion, dropped to 13-8-1.
Petelo and Jamali, both southpaws, started at a rapid pace and the bout was quickly over.
Petelo landed the left to Jamali’s midriff and the Filipino collapsed, unable to beat the count 1 minute, 21 seconds into the bout.
