Keane hat trick leads Galaxy past Salt Lake
CARSON, California (AP) — Robbie Keane scored three second-half hat trick to help the Los Angeles rally for a victory 4-2 over Major League Soccer Real Salt Lake on Saturday.
Keane scored in the 56th, 67th and 86th minutes to help the Galaxy pull four points behind Salt Lake and tighten an eight-team battle for five Western Conference playoff berths. The top seven teams are separated by eight points, with San Jose another three points back.
Joao Plata gave Real Salt Lake a lead in the 53rd minute.
Keane scored from a long pass by Jimenez to equalize, then volleyed Los Angeles ahead 11 minutes later.
Omar Gonzalez made it 3-1 with a header from Landon Donovan’s corner in the 75th, and Keane got his 10th goal of the season to complete his hat trick, lifting the ball over rushing goalkeeper Nick Rimando.
Robbie Findley scored in the final minute of regulation for Salt Lake.
At Columbus, Ohio, Federico Higuain scored two goals for the second straight match, lifting Columbus to a 2-0 victory over Toronto FC.
The Argentinean forward gave the Crew the lead in the 19th minute, then connected for an exquisite chip for his second in the 67th. Higuain perfectly placed a looping ball from 23 yards over the futile effort of goalkeeper Joe Bendik, who was only a few yards off the goal line.
Montreal striker Marco Di Vaio scored twice to lead the Impact to a 2-1 win over D.C. United.
The former Italy forward scored in the in the 43rd minute before Conor Doyle equalized for D.C.in the 81st. Di Vaio then netted the winner two minutes later.
Juan Agudelo returned to the New England lineup after a two-month injury to score in the 54th minute and lead the Revolution to a 2-0 win over the Chicago Fire.
Kelyn Rowe banged in a rebound of a Saer Sene shot in 1st minute of injury time for New England’s second goal.
In other games, Giles Barnes scored twice in the first half and Will Bruin added a goal after the break as the Houston Dynamo downed the Seattle Sounders 3-1, the Colorado Rapids blanked the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-0, the Portland Timbers edged FC Dallas 2-1 and the Philadelphia Union drew 0-0 with the New York Red Bulls.
