Trooper escapes serious injury but squad car totaled
SOUTH BEND – An Indiana State Police trooper suffered minor injuries when his car crashed and rolled over during a pursuit on the Indiana Toll Road early Wednesday in St. Joseph County.
Just before 8 a.m. Wednesday, Master Trooper Bradley Kaizer, a 31-year ISP veteran, escaped serious injury when he lost control of his 2016 Dodge Charger squad car near the 77.4 mile marker just east of Notre Dame, according to a statement from ISP.
He was attempting to catch up to a traffic violator when he lost control of his police car on the Juniper Road overpass, which was slick due to overnight frost, ISP said. The car entered the center median and rolled over several times, crossing into the eastbound lanes, and striking the guardrail on the south side of the road.
It finally landed on its roof and continued to slide, coming to rest in the center of the eastbound lanes, ISP said.
Kaizer was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, where he was treated and released for cuts and abrasions. He was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Traffic was able to get by on the inside shoulder with a brief shutdown of eastbound traffic to remove the vehicle.
