WILBERFORCE, Ohio (AP) _ Someone tried to burn a cross next to the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center, a museum official said Tuesday.

Museum spokesman Michael Sampson said staffers saw the scorched, 5-foot wooden cross when they arrived at work. It was scrawled with racial epithets, ``KKK'' and a swastika. He said there was the smell of kerosene in the air.

``It was shocking. Our staffers are very uneasy,'' Sampson said.
