Ga. Boy Brain Dead After Shooting

February 12, 2005

FOREST PARK, Ga. (AP) _ A 2-year-old boy was brain dead and on life support Saturday, two days after being shot in the neck during a confrontation with an intruder demanding money, authorities said.

Police initially said the intruder killed the child Thursday with a shot to the neck. But authorities later said the child was on life support, and that it was unclear who fired the fatal shot.

``It is true that the child is on life support,″ Kevin McClelland, a spokesman for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, said Saturday, adding that the boy was brain dead.

Clayton County police Capt. Jeff Turner said Friday that the intruder entered the apartment and grabbed the child while demanding $1,000 in tax return money from the child’s father.

The assailant ``started counting down 5, 4, 3 with the gun pointed at the child’s head,″ Turner said. But before he could finish the countdown, the boy’s aunt walked into the room.

Police said the intruder then fired two shots, one of which was believed to have hit the toddler. But according to broadcast reports Saturday, police said the father also may have fired two shots and it wasn’t clear which bullet struck the boy. Police in this Atlanta suburb told The Associated Press they had no immediate comment.
