Tropicana Cuts 233 Jobs
BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) _ Tropicana Products Inc. eliminated 233 jobs Wednesday in a cost-control program, including 145 layoffs.
The Seagram Co. subsidiary fired 105 workers at its Bradenton headquarters, and 40 at distribution plants in the City of Industry, Calif., and Jersey City, N.J. The remaining cuts involved eliminating vacant positions.
Fired workers were notified individually Wednesday and paid through May 1. Severance packages of varying lengths were offered, and all costs were absorbed in the fiscal year ended Jan. 31.
Cuts came at management and staff levels in administration, finance, human resources and operations supervision.
″We believe it is necessary in today’s competitive economy to make sure that we are organized as efficiently as possible,″ Tropicana President William Pietersen said.
Tropicana is left with about 4,000 employees in the United States, Canada, France, Great Britain and Japan.
