Slain Reporter’s Neighbor Charged
TEMPLE, Texas (AP) _ A neighbor who had a clear view into a television reporter’s apartment was charged Friday with killing her.
Anthony Gary Silvestri, 21, was covered with blood when he was taken into custody Thursday morning in the apartment of KWTX reporter Kathryn Dettman.
Silvestri was being held on $500,000 bond.
Police initially said it appeared Ms. Dettman, 36, was beaten to death. But preliminary autopsy results indicated Ms. Dettman suffered numerous stab wounds to the upper body.
A screwdriver and other items believed used to kill Ms. Dettman were recovered at the scene, police said.
Ms. Dettman apparently left her door open Thursday to let her cats in and out, and Silvestri could see into her apartment from his own, police chief Ralph Evangelous said
``You can look out his window and look into Kathryn’s apartment,″ he said. Officers discovered binoculars in his bedroom.
Police have yet to determine a motive. But friends of Ms. Dettman say the suspect had been calling her.
Ms. Dettman was to have started work Monday for KTVT-TV in Dallas-Fort Worth. Ms. Dettman had worked for The Associated Press, in Los Angeles and in Washington D.C.
