Nighttime closure of Westport’s Cribari Bridge begins next week

July 24, 2018

WESTPORT - Repairs to the William Cribari Bridge will require traffic detours that will begin Monday and continue through Sept. 7.

The state Department of Transportation said the evening bridge closure and detour will be from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., Mondays through Thursdays.

The work is needed to make repairs to the bridge’s overhead truss system. The bridge takes Route 136 over the Saugatuck River.

Cribari Bridge, originally constructed in 1884, underwent a superstructure replacement in 1991, during which the bridge’s original trusses, or triangular pieces, were retained as ornamental facade. While the superstructure is in fair condition, the trusses, which are not considered primary load-carrying units, are in critical condition, said Priti Bhardwaj, a transportation supervising engineer with the DOT who is serving as manager of the Cribari project.

“Even though they don’t carry vehicular live load, they do support their own weight and do pose a significant safety hazard if they continue to sustain vehicular damage,” Bhardwaj said last week.

The detour will use portable detour signs to guide motorists through the detour. No lane closures will occur from 6 a.m. Friday,Aug. 31 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4.

The detour will direct motorists from the west side of the bridge north onto Riverside Avenue and north onto Route 33 then north/east onto Route 1 and then south onto Route 136/Compo Road to Bridge Street/Greens Farm Road.

The detour will direct motorists from the east side of the bridge east on Bridge Street then north onto Route 136/Compo Road then south/west onto Route 1 and south onto Route 33 and south on Riverside Avenue.
