Breaking: National Weather Service issues tornado watch
A tornado watch has been initiated in counties across central and northern Illinois, according to the National Weather Service.
The watch will be in effect until 5 p.m. Thursday in the following counties:
Boone, Champaign, Cook, DeKalb, DeWitt, DuPage, Ford, Grundy, Iroquois, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall, Lake, LaSalle, Livingston, McHenry, McLean, Piatt, Vermilion and Will.
The service issued a hazardous weather outlook just before 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, warning of an elevated risk of quarter-size hail, winds up to 60 mph and tornadoes.
Scattered severe thunderstorms are expected ahead a strong cold front. ”
There is a risk for tornadoes, damaging winds and hail with the most intense thunderstorms, with the higher threat over the Chicago metro along and east of Interstate 55,” the warning said.
