Leftist group claims responsibility for attack on Olympic offices
ATHENS, Greece (AP) _ A leftist group claimed responsibility today for a firebomb attack that damaged the entrance to the Greek Olympic Committee.
A police official said an anonymous caller claiming to represent the group, known as the Struggle, told an Athens newspaper that it staged the attack late Sunday to oppose Athens’ bid for the 2004 Summer Olympics.
No one was injured by the incendiary bomb _ three gas canisters and a fuse. The fire burned the door to the offices.
No arrests had been made. An armed guard was stationed outside the Greek Olympic Committee offices.
The group is believed to have staged fire bomb attacks in the past against government and business associations.
The International Olympic Committee will award the 2004 Games on Friday. It was the first significant attack in Greece linked to the bid.
In Stockholm, Sweden, another city in the running for the 2004 Games, a series of bombings and threats have been waged in opposition to the Games.
Chris Athanasopoulos, a spokesman for the Athens bid committee, described the attack as ``amateur.″
``It is still a bad thing, but not that important,″ he said.
Anthanasopoulos said no additional security was planned around the bid committee offices, located in a central Athens building that housed athletes during the first modern Olympiad in 1896.
