HOUSTON (AP) _ Guard Tommy McGhee scored 24 points in Rice’s 69-51 victory over Southern Methodist Wednesday night for the Owls’ sixth straight success against the Mustangs.

The Owls (9-5, 2-1 Southwest Conference) got 11 points from Robert Johnson, and center Shaun Igo, in his second game back after missing four games due to a staph infection of his right knee, scored 10 points in only 18 minutes.

Troy Matthews scored 12 points on four 3-pointers for SMU (5-9, 1-2), which never got closer than 13 points in the second half. The Mustangs shot only 33 percent for the game.

Bobby Dimson was the Mustangs’ only other player in double figures was with 11, but Jabari Hearn had a game-high 8 rebounds.

The Mustangs fell behind 39-18 at halftime, shooting 30 percent and connecting on only 1 of 9 three-pointers.

The 18 points are the lowest scored in the first half by an Owl opponent in Willis Wilson’s four years as head coach.
