ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (AP) _ A homemade hand grenade accidentally exploded, killing two men, authorities said.

Jack Dau, 32, and Timothy McIntire, 46, of Rock Island, died Sunday, Rock Island County Coroner Richard Verbeck said. A hand grenade pin was found near one of the bodies.

''At this point, we're leaning toward it being accidental,'' said Sheriff Gordy Powell. ''We don't believe there was a third party involved.''

The grenade went off near Lock 31 on the Hennepin Canal on Big Island, an area popular with fishermen, Powell said.

The two were neighbors who hunted and fished together, the sheriff said.

The grenade was homemade, Powell said, but he did not know who made it.

Verbeck said McIntire was a construction worker, while Dan had been laid off from Deere & Co.
