Street, Park Named for Elian’s Mom
HIALEAH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) _ An 11-block stretch of a street and an adjacent park were dedicated Friday to Elian Gonzalez’s mother, who drowned in November trying to reach the United States from Cuba.
Lazaro Gonzalez, great-uncle of the 6-year-old boy, and the mayors of three suburban Miami cities attended the ceremony honoring Elisabeth Brotons.
A plaque will be placed at the park along a canal ``acknowledging the ultimate sacrifice that this mother had done for her son to live in a democratic and free country,″ Mayor Fatima Morejon said.
Although Elian is living in Maryland with his father while his Miami relatives appeal for asylum for the boy, Morejon said she hopes the boy can stay in the United States ``and make the wish happen for the mother.″
Brotons is considered a hero in South Florida’s Cuban-American community for dying along with 10 others while attempting a crossing from Cuba to Florida. Elian and two others survived.
