MACON, Ga. (AP) _ A suspected murderer fleeing from police took as many as three people hostage in a shopping mall today.

The man was being chased by officers when he wrecked his car in the Macon Mall parking lot, injuring three people, said Bibb County police chief deputy P.T. Grant. He then ran inside and took hostages in a gift store, Grant said.

Police originally identified the hostage-taker as a Macon man wanted for murder in Florida but later said they think he is a different murder suspect from Atlanta.

The mall, which has more than 100 stores, was immediately evacuated and a police SWAT team was called in. Police were trying to negotiate the hostages' release, Grant said.

It was not immediately clear if anyone had been injured inside the mall.
