‘Pay what you can’ spot opens to battle addiction
A new San Antonio restaurant opened Friday with a “pay what you can” menu to help fund addiction recovery.
Located on Bandera Road, just inside Loop 410 in Leon Valley, Comfort Café is the second location for the restaurant founded in Smithville, southeast of Bastrop, in 2010. All proceeds from both benefit the SerenityStar Recovery center, also in Smithville.
Meals come with a suggested $10 donation, and $5 for housemade desserts and specialty drinks, but no customer is turned away.
“We’ve all had our hard times where maybe we only had $3 in our pockets, and you can come here and get some pancakes without judgment,” said Chris Homer, pastry chef and manager at Comfort Café. “We’ve also had a person come in and pay $1,500 for a salad. Whatever you give is money that is going to help save somebody’s life.”
San Antonio was selected for the second location because several SerenityStar Recovery center clients have come from here.
“We felt there was a need to bring more recovery awareness to the city and be more accessible,” Homer said. “A big part of the recovery process is doing service.”
The restaurant staff is comprised of volunteers who are either in the center or graduated from it. The cafe serves breakfast and lunch Friday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The menu, which is identical to the Smithville location, is large and includes stuffed French toast, crepes and waffles, sweet cream pancakes and loaded up omelets. Nine different salads are available, as is build-your-own pasta, hot and cold sandwiches and seven different burgers.
Comfort Café serves gourmet coffee and specialty drinks like milkshakes and ice cream floats.
