Wanderers’ Mullen gets 2nd chance at ACL title
SYDNEY (AP) — Western Sydney Wanderers defender Daniel Mullen is getting a second chance to play in an Asian Champions League final, six years after his first.
Mullen was a late addition to Adelaide United’s squad in the knockout stages of the 2008 playoffs, marking an A-League team’s first appearance in the final.
But after he featured in three of the four games as Adelaide beat Japan’s Kashima Antlers and Uzbekistan’s Bunyodkor, Mullen was called up to the Australia squad for the 2008 AFC under-19 championship and missed United’s 5-0 aggregate loss to Japan’s Gamba Osaka in the final.
Mullen, now 24, is in the Wanderers squad for Saturday’s first-leg match against Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal. The return leg is set for Nov. 1 in Riyadh.
