A friendly competition

September 2, 2018

Since its establishment more than 20 years ago, Top Score Amusement has been providing a reason for community members to gather for a friendly competition through its annual darts and pool tournaments.

Matt Loseke, sales associate at Top Score Amusement, found his passion for pool competing in the business’s youth pool tournament when he was 9 years old. Even after years have passed, the Columbus High School graduate still competes.

“It’s a game you can always learn from,” Loseke said. “It’s very nice that you can never master it, you’re always going to learn something. No matter how old you get, you’re always going to learn.”

Loseke said the passion eventually led him to join the staff at the establishment by Tim Long, who also manages Shenanigans Bar.

The dart tournaments are held every Monday while the pool tournaments are held every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at various bars in town. Each team has to consist of four individuals.

“It’s really nice,” Loseke said. “You meet a lot of great people. I definitely recommend it.”

Top Score employees partner up with various organizations in the area to host national pool tournaments, such as the Nebraska State Eagle Annual Pool Tournament held early this year.

The business recently moved into a showroom at 1363 23rd Ave. allowing customers to check out the array of items available for sale, such as pool tables, gaming equipment and furniture.

Loseke said some of the items available at the showroom are placed in various businesses in Columbus and its surrounding areas, such as Seward and Monroe, as sources of entertainment for their customers.

He said the business has expanded its inventory to carry more items catered for families, such as game sets for cornhole, basketball, air hockey and bean bag toss. He noted these activities can help strengthen relationships among families, as well as keep members active.

Those interested in participating in the pool tournament on Wednesdays are encouraged to attend a meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Micek Bar, 2506 12th St., and at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 11 at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, 3205 12th St., to sign up for the tournament on Tuesdays.

The application fee for the tournament ranges from $7-11 per night per person.
