FBI to Join Hunt For Killers of Anti-Mafia Crusader

May 29, 1992

ROME (AP) _ U.S. federal agents will help investigate the assassination of Italy’s top anti-Mafia crusader, the U.S. Embassy said on Friday.

Embassy spokesman Tom Skipper said he did not know how many FBI agents would be sent or how they would assist in the hunt for the killers of Giovanni Falcone.

Falcone, the judge who led the most important investigations of Sicilian mobsters, was killed last Saturday by a bomb blast on a highway near Palermo.

The explosion also killed Falcone’s wife and three bodyguards, and tore up a 200-yard stretch of the road.

U.S. Ambassador Peter Secchia said Monday that U.S. Attorney General William Barr and FBI Director William Sessions had offered to provide help from the FBI.
