NEW YORK (AP) _ Treasury bond prices were lower at midday.

The price of the Treasury's main 30-year bond was down 3/16 point, or $1.88 per $1,000 in face value, in afternoon trading, while its yield rose to 5.67 percent from 5.66 percent late Wednesday. Prices and yields move in opposite directions.

Short-term rates were mixed.

Yields on three-month Treasury bills fell to 4.97 percent as the discount fell 0.03 percentage point from late Wednesday to 4.85 percent. Six-month yields held steady at 5.28 percent as the discount was unchanged from late Wednesday at 5.08 percent. One-year yields rose to 5.40 percent as the discount rose 0.02 point to 5.13 percent.

Yields are the interest bonds pay by maturity, while the discount is the interest at which they are sold.
