Sydney back on top in A-League

November 18, 2017

SYDNEY (AP) — Defending champion Sydney FC rebounded from a loss to Central Coast to inflict the first defeat in the A-League on Newcastle 2-1 and regain top spot.

Sydney was knocked out of first place when it lost to the Mariners 2-0, ending an unbeaten start to its title defense.

Beating Newcastle 2-1 on Saturday with goals to Milos Ninkovic and Bobo on either side of halftime lifted it two points clear of Newcastle.

Melbourne City suffered its second loss in three matches to drop back to third place, going down to previously winless Brisbane 3-1.

Western Sydney remained fourth despite the postponement of its seventh-round match against Wellington because of pitch conditions.

Perth faces last-played Melbourne Victory on Sunday.
