Man charged with repeatedly sexually assaulting 12-year-old girl
BRIDGEPORT - A local man has been accused of repeatedly sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl, telling her it was the way to make her his girlfriend.
Klever Maldonado, 40, of Wood Avenue was arrested Tuesday and charged with three counts of first-degree sexual assault and three counts of risk of injury to a child.
He was being held in lieu of $200,000 bond.
“We intend to vigorously defend our client,” said Maldonado’s lawyer, Guy Soares.
The girl’s mother reported the sexual assaults to police in 2014 but after an investigation by the now dissolved Youth Bureau, the case sat for four years.
During a forensic interview, police said the girl them that Maldonado, a family friend, had made numerous comments to her about her being beautiful and asking to be her boyfriend. But when she turned 12, police said Maldonado became more aggressive.
One evening when the girl’s parents were out police said Maldonado came to the girl’s home smelling of alcohol and insisting that he wanted to have sex with her to consummate their relationship. When the girl told him no, he pulled her clothes off and sexually assaulted her, police said.
Police said Maldonado sexually assaulted the girl on two more occasions in her home.
“Maldonado told the victim not to tell her parents about the sex because that’s what boyfriends and girlfriends do,” police said.
But police said the girl did eventually tell her mother what was going on and the mother contacted police.
