Ohio police officers shoot, kill suspect after exchanging fire

PERRYSBURG TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A suspect was shot and killed by officers Monday after he opened fire while trying to run from police, according to reports.

Police did not identify the suspect, who was killed after he tried to escape following a traffic stop.

The Blade reports police initially stopped the vehicle with three occupants at about 2:30 p.m. on Interstate 75 near an exit for U.S. 20.

One person was taken into custody during the stop, WTVG Channel 13 reports. The car then left with the two remaining occupants inside.

Police started chasing the car and a passenger got out and tried to run but was caught. The chase of the car continued for about an hour before the vehicle crashed, according to WTOL Channel 11.

The driver ran from the car and was being chased by officers when began firing at them with a handgun. Officers then shot the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene, reports say.

No officers were injured. The shooting remains under investigation.

Perrysburg Township is located just south of Toledo.
