Florida A&M 2, Morgan St. 0 (forfeit)
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ Florida A&M was awarded a 2-0 forfeit over Morgan State Monday night when Bears coach Nat Frazier refused to leave the gymnasium after being ejected from the game.
Frazier was called for his third technical foul and ejected for arguing calls at 15:40 of the second half when Morgan State led the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game 42-41.
But instead of leaving the gym, Frazier took a seat in the seventh row of the stands. Officials refused to resume play until the coach left the gymnasium. After giving him several more chances, the officials awarded a forfeit to Florida A&M.
Under NCAA rules, since the Rattlers were trailing in the game, their winning score was officially recorded as 2-0.
″I thought the officiating was lousy,″ Frazier said after the game. ″They either didn’t know the rules or overlooked the rules. The films will verify what I said.″
Frazier said the rules state that the officials decide whether an ejected coach must leave the gymnasium or only the area of the court. Frazier said officials merely told him ″to leave.″
But Florida A&M coach Willie Booker said an ejected coach must leave to gym. Booker said Frazier humiliated the officials.
″They get paid to do a job and do the best they can,″ he said. ″Then to go out and get humiliated in front of thousands of fans. ... Once you do that, the (players) start doing that. We try to teach our kids respect.″
The officials left the building immediately after the game and were unavailable for comment.
Morgan State jumped out to a 12-0 lead and led at halftime 35-26. But Florida A&M mounted a comeback early in the second half, knotting the score at 35 on a Terry Giles jumper with 18:01 left. The game remained close until the forfeit.
″I didn’t want to win it that way,″ Booker said. ″We were ready to play in the second half. But a win is a win. We’ll take it.″
Leonard King led the Rattlers with 13 points, while Morgan State was led in scoring by Anthony Reid and Damone Williams, both with 10.
The forfeit improves Florida A&M to 13-7 overall and 8-2 in the MEAC, while Morgan State falls to 12-9, 7-3. The teams play again Thursday in Baltimore.
