More charges made against alleged child abuser at North Augusta daycare

March 30, 2019

A woman who was previously charged with five counts of child abuse while working at a North Augusta daycare center is now facing four additional charges, according to North Augusta Department of Public Safety records.

Wendi Nelson, 57, of Hephzibah, Georgia, turned herself in to NADPS after new video footage surfaced of her allegedly abusing children while working at the True Foundations Daycare on Hidden Hills Drive.

Nelson now faces nine charges for assaulting nine different juvenile victims, all ages 3-4 years old, according to Lt. Tim Thorton with NADPS.

Nelson was located by officers and arrested earlier in March after parents and guardians began filing complaints with NADPS about video footage from the daycare, where Nelson worked at the time, which they claimed depicted Nelson abusing their children.

According to incident reports, Nelson is frequently seen “forcibly” pulling children out of their chairs by their arms and yelling in their faces in the footage. In one video, she pulled a child out of a chair by their ears, according to reports. Another lists Nelson kicking a child in the head.

NADPS records state the children’s guardians learned about the abuse because a supervisor at the daycare contacted them and informed them of the footage, which the parents were invited to review at the facility.

The daycare terminated Nelson, submitted an in-house report to the Department of Social Services and provided the footage to police. Nelson, who claimed she “did not remember” the incidents, was booked to the Aiken County detention center on five felony counts of unlawful conduct toward a child.

The four new charges for child abuse simple assault levied against Nelson come from additional footage that surfaced from her time at the daycare.

In one video, Nelson was observed to strike the victim “with an open palm” for not moving off a carpet quickly enough.

“The next video shows (the victim) ... rubbing the back of his head and another child asking if he was okay,” reads the report. “The footage also shows the juvenile’s friend grab him by the hand as if she was protecting him.”

It is unknown if Nelson allegedly abused even more children at this time.
