CORVARA IN BADIA, Italy (AP) _ For the second year in a row, police raided the hotels housing teams competing in the Giro d’Italia.
The ANSA news agency said the Wednesday night raids, part of a probe into alleged doping violations, involved the Ceramiche Panaria, Saeco, Mapei and Mercatone Uno teams.
The raid followed the completion of the 16th stage.
Last year, police raided the hotels playing host to some cycling teams after the 17th stage. The blitz was part of an investigation into allegations that riders were using banned performance-enhancing drugs.
This year, 2000 champion Stefano Garzelli was suspended after testing positive for a banned diuretic. Also, defending champion Gilberto Simoni withdrew from the race Friday after testing positive for cocaine metabolites at a random test last April.
