STATE TOURNAMENT ROUNDUP Immaculate soccer reaches Class S quarters
The Immaculate boys soccer team reached the Class S quarterfinals for the first time since 1998, as late goals from Quinn Guth and Tristian DiNatale sealed a 3-1 win over St. Paul on Thursday afternoon. DiNatale scored twice for the Mustangs, who will visit No. 2 Litchfield in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
DiNatale opened the scoring at the Farmington Sports Arena. No. 23 Immaculate is the lowest seed remaining in any class.
Brookfield was ousted in the Class M tournament by Tolland, which claimed a 1-0 road win under the lights. Ryan Sirois notched the winner for the Eagles. SWC finalist Barlow was eliminated from the Class L playoffs as Branford claimed a penalty shootout win after a 0-0 tie. The Hornets won the shootout 5-4.
In Class LL, Pomperaug claimed a 1-0 upset of No. 5 Farmington on the road, sealing a place in the quarterfinals. The Panthers will host No. 13 Conard, which upset South Windsor.
Madison Halas twice found the back of the cage as No. 3 Immaculate beat defending champion North Branford 3-1 to advance to the Class S semifinals for a second straight year. Francesca Coppola also scored for the Mustangs, who will face No. 2 Stonington in the semifinals.
New Fairfield had its season end Thursday as Stonington claimed a 2-0 win.
No. 2 Barlow swept East Haven 3-0 (25-12, 25-4, 25-13) to advance to the Class L quarterfinals on Thursday. The Falcons will host Guilford in the final eight on Saturday at 6 p.m.
No. 12 Brookfield dropped a 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-20) decision to Tolland in Class L.
