International Coker College student visits Darlington Raceway

September 2, 2018

Georgia Reece, second from the left, is experiencing NASCAR for the very first time as she is with a group of Coker College athletes who have garnered various jobs for the Bojangles Southern 500 this weekend. The other Coker students are (from left to right) Claire Slamka, Reece, Kayla Lazo, Samantha Hoofman and Gavin Colcino.

DARLINTON, S.C. - If you are from South Carolina, especially in the Pee Dee Area, it’s hard to believe that anyone hasn’t been to the BoJangles Southern 500.

Georgia Reese is one of those people, however.

She is a psychology student from Kent, England.

She plays soccer for Coker College in Hartsville, S.C.

She has never been to a race.

“This is my first time,” she said. “It’s really cool and I like the atmosphere of it. The people are really close.”

She was not going to be able to watch Saturday’s race, but will be in attendance on Sunday.

Coker College students are required to perform service hours as part of their graduation requirement.

There are students representing women’s soccer, baseball and softball ad men’s and women’s basketball.

Reese was joined by her teammates working the entrance gate between the entertainment venue and the grandstands.
