NJ Gov’s Daughter Cited for Litter
BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) _ The 21-year-old daughter of New Jersey Gov. Christie Whitman was cited for littering when she threw a beer can on the ground in front of a police officer.
A crying Kate R. Whitman was handcuffed and placed in a police cruiser while the officer wrote out the citation early Saturday, according to a police report. She faces a fine of $50 to $300.
Patrolman Jonathan Pesesko said in his report that Ms. Whitman’s eyes were bloodshot and glassy and that he detected an odor of alcohol. She was visiting friends here and was with three other women.
Pesesko said he saw Ms. Whitman carrying a beer can while on patrol. He said she heeded his request to throw it away after telling him it wasn’t easy being the governor’s daughter.
But Pesesko said he returned to the area later and caught her again with a beer can. She spotted him and threw it on the ground, he said.
The incident was a ``lapse in judgment,″ the governor said in a statement. ``I have discussed the matter with my daughter and, like any other parent, I am concerned about the littering charge and Kate’s alleged behavior.″
