Jamie DuffyMay 24, 2019

A Fort Wayne police officer has resigned from the force after admitting he beat a man at the Allen County Jail.

Charles Smith, 28, punched Jason Chambers on March 23 when Chambers refused to have his blood drawn for a blood-alcohol test after being pulled over on suspicion of driving drunk, a probable cause affidavit said.

Smith went to place Chambers in handcuffs and when he pulled away, Smith punched the man three times, causing a visible cut and swelling to the man’s forehead, court records said.

According to the affidavit, the assault was recorded showing Smith holding handcuffs in a cutting position when he struck Chambers.
