US honeymooner caught with bullets in Cayman
GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands (AP) — A U.S. man beginning his Cayman Islands honeymoon was arrested after customs officers allegedly found 50 rounds of ammunition in his luggage, officials said Tuesday.
A government statement said the man is a 27-year-old from Wyoming but they did not release his name or hometown. He was arrested Saturday at the international airport on the British Caribbean territory’s main island of Grand Cayman and was granted bail.
Customs officers say they found the 9-mm bullets when they searched his luggage. They say the man told them he was visiting the islands on his honeymoon and had simply forgotten about the bullets.
But Customs Collector Samantha Bennett said the “consequences of such ammunition falling into the wrong hands cannot be overlooked.”
The government information service said it had been advised that the U.S. man probably would be charged.
Last year, authorities in the British Caribbean dependency of the Turks & Caicos Islands decided not to prosecute two American tourists accused of having one bullet each in their luggage at the islands’ airport. The two Florida residents were arrested and jailed after denying knowing anything about the bullets.
