Tiger Woods Wins PGA Championship

August 15, 1999

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) _ Tiger Woods is a major champion once again, only this time no one is ready to concede him the future of golf.

With 19-year-old Sergio Garcia putting on the heat with a stunning array of shots, Woods gathered himself in time to make a crucial par save on the 17th hole and win the PGA Championship by one stroke.

Woods tapped in for par on the 18th for an even-par 72, mustered up enough strength to pump his fist and breathed a huge sigh of relief. At 23, he becomes the youngest player to win two majors since Seve Ballesteros in 1980.

Only this was nothing like Woods’ 12-stroke victory in the Masters two years ago. Woods had a five-stroke lead with seven holes to play until Garcia, the Spanish sensation known as ``El Nino,″ stormed down the stretch and nearly caught him.
