Congaree Wins Del Mar Breeders’ Cup

DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) _ Congaree rebounded from two stakes defeats by winning the $250,000 Del Mar Breeders’ Cup Handicap by one length over Kela on Monday.

Ridden by Mike Smith and carrying 119 pounds, Congaree covered 1 mile in 1:36 1-5 and paid $4.80, $3 and $2.60

The win was the sixth in 12 lifetime starts for Congaree, the 7-5 favorite, and was worth $150,000, raising the career earnings of the 4-year-old son of Arazi to $1,423,400.

Congaree, trained by Bob Baffert, finished third in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes and won the Swaps Stakes last year, when he earned over $1 million as a 3-year-old.

After returning to training with a victory in the Lone Star Park Handicap in late May, Congaree was beaten soundly in both the Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs and San Diego Handicap at Del Mar.

Kela, the 8-5 second-favorite, returned $3 and $2.40. Reba’s Gold, who finished third in the 16th running of the race for 3-year-olds and up, paid $3.20 to show. Kela finished a head in front of Reba’s Gold, who was another neck in front of Euchre at the wire.

Earlier in the day, Super High led all the way in winning the $125,000 Solana Beach Handicap by 2 1/2 lengths over Stetson Lady.

Ridden by Garrett Gomez and carrying 115 pounds, Super High covered one mile on turf in the stakes-record time of 1:33 3-5 and paid $6.20, $3.60 and $2.60.

Stetson Lady returned $7.80 and $4.60 and Elaine’s Angel, who finished third in the eighth running of the race for fillies and mares bred in California, paid $3.80 to show.
