Reds Place SS Larkin on DL
HOUSTON (AP) _ The Cincinnati Reds placed shortstop Barry Larkin on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a sprained left ring finger.
Larkin, on the DL for the third time this season, injured his finger in Friday night’s game against the Houston Astros when he struck out in the third inning. Larkin returned to Cincinnati for further examinations.
Larkin, batting .282 with two homers and 18 RBIs, had just returned to the lineup Wednesday after missing six games when he aggravated scar tissue left over from hernia surgery.
The Reds purchased the contract of infielder Jim Chamblee from Triple-A Louisville to replace Larkin. Chamblee batted .280 with five home runs and 32 RBIs in 80 appearances at Louisville.
The Reds also announced the signing of right-hander Richie Gardner, their sixth-round pick in June.
