NEW YORK (AP) _ Wanting to open a spot on their 40-man roster, the New York Yankees put right-hander Jason Grimsley on waivers Monday for the purpose of his unconditional release.

Grimsley, 33, was 3-2 with a 5.04 ERA and one save in four starts and 59 relief appearances last season. He made $750,000 and the Yankees didn't want to go to salary arbitration with him.

He was sidelined late in the year by arm problems, another factor in the Yankees' decision.
