Police: Resident shot man who broke into Fayetteville home, assaulted woman

Authorities are investigating after a resident shot a burglar inside a Fayetteville home Thursday evening.

Fayetteville police said a woman was assaulted after a man broke into a home in the 5000 block of Birch Road and another person inside the home fired at least one shot at the man.

Police said the wounded man arrived at Fayetteville Fire Station 12 on Hope Mills Road at about 6:40 p.m. and was subsequently taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The woman suffered non-life threatening injuries as a result of the assault, police said.

Authorities said the name of the man and woman were being withheld until family members could be notified.
